The Living God Has Won Already

The biblical narrative consistently portrays the God of Israel as a Divine Warrior who intervenes in human history to protect His covenant people, execute judgment upon systemic wickedness, and advance His redemptive purposes across the ages.

I enjoy watching biblical archaeology, and recently I watched a program about the hailstones. When I saw artifacts from the time the Lord destroyed Israel’s enemies with terrible hailstones from heaven, I was in awe of God. It happened, and history validates it.

In the Book of Joshua, the Lord employs catastrophic meteorological phenomena—specifically, massive, targeted hailstones—to annihilate a Canaanite military.

You see, the physical battlefields of the ancient Near East emerge as much more than localized territorial disputes; they serve as typological precursors to the cosmic spiritual warfare articulated in the New Testament.

By tracing the thematic continuum from the hailstones of the Beth-horon pass to the spiritual armor detailed in Ephesians 6, believers in Yeshua recognize the invisible, demonic dimensions of earthly conflicts, stand resolutely with the Jewish people through intercessory prayer, and understand that Israel’s geopolitical victories are inextricably linked to the spiritual forces governing the heavenly realms.

I do not think you are a Christian if you do not stand with Israel, and I am so grateful to be surrounded by beloved Christians who stand with the State of Israel and Jews around the world at all times and forever.

Joshua 10: The Battle of Gibeon and the Amorite

Adoni-zedec feared the Israelite army after the total destruction of Jericho, so he summoned four other prominent Amorite kings to form an alliance.

The group had Hoham, king of Hebron; Piram, king of Jarmuth; Japhia, king of Lachish; and Debir, king of Eglon. The alarm and psychological depression that permeated the region after they heard about Israel’s miraculous crossing of the Jordan River forced the Amorite kingdoms into reactive alliances.

The Ascent From Gilgal

Upon receiving an urgent, desperate plea for military assistance from the besieged Gibeonites, who warned that “all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us,” Joshua did not hesitate.

Divine authorization and assurance accompany this rapid military maneuver. The Lord speaks directly to Joshua, commanding, “Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee” (Joshua 10:8).

This distinct divine command was a prerequisite for all major strategic steps in the conquest of Canaan, establishing beyond doubt that Israel’s military engagements were directed and ordained by Yahweh. The victory was assured in the spiritual realm before a single sword was drawn in the physical realm.

Joshua’s response is characterized by rapid, decisive, and exhausting physical action. He executes a stealthy night march from the base camp at Gilgal, bringing all the people of war and the mighty men of valor.

The Bible attests to the text’s precise geographical accuracy, stating that Joshua “went up” from Gilgal. The topography from the Jordan Valley to the central highlands near Gibeon is a continuous, steep ascent, and it was perfect for the hailstones to impact the enemies.

This sudden, unexpected appearance of the Israelite vanguard at dawn throws the massive Amorite coalition into a panic—a divinely induced fear that shatters their ranks and initiates their disastrous rout.

Hailstones: The Divine Supernatural Weaponry of Yahweh

As the Amorite armies break and flee in disarray down the steep, narrow descent of the Beth-horon pass toward Azekah and Makkedah, the narrative transitions to an unprecedented display of divine intervention.

Joshua 10:11 records the pivotal supernatural event: “the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword”.

This meteorological catastrophe is fraught with profound biblical, historical, and scientific significance. The hailstones were of extraordinary magnitude and hardness, exhibiting a lethal velocity accelerated by the topography of the descending mountain corridor.

Historical and meteorological analyses confirm the physical plausibility of such an event; the phenomenon known as “mega hail” is generated by the collision of moist, heated Mediterranean air over the Philistine plain with the cool, descending air of the Judean uplands.

This atmospheric collision spawns severe supercells capable of producing stones weighing over a kilogram, accelerating through the wind funnel of the Beth-horon pass to lethal velocities exceeding 50 meters per second.

I watched an archaeological episode about this and I just fell on my face and worshiped the living God. He is the God of Jeshurun, He is the Warrior, He is a Man of war.

That’s why when anyone touches Israel, they have touched the apple of His eye, and HE fights for Israel, even history records how antisemites ended up suffering.

The holy biblical text emphatically subordinates the meteorological phenomenon to the spiritual reality: the storm was a weapon wielded with absolute sovereign precision by the Creator. The divine targeting of the hailstones is the critical aspect of the miracle.

The text specifies that the hailstones annihilated the fleeing Canaanite forces while entirely sparing the pursuing Israelite soldiers who were in close proximity. The ancient Jewish historian Josephus Flavius posits that thunder and lightning were inextricably mingled with hail, an assertion supported by poetic descriptions of divine warfare in Habakkuk and Job

Habakkuk 3:11 The sun and moon stood still in their habitation; At the light of Your arrows they went, At the shining of Your glittering spear.

And Job 38:22-23 “Have you entered the treasury of snow, Or have you seen the treasury of hail, Which I have reserved for the time of trouble, For the day of battle and war?

This precise, miraculous event perfectly mirrors the plagues of Egypt, specifically the devastating plague of hail that decimated the Egyptian infrastructure and populace while entirely sparing the Israelites residing in the land of Goshen

(Exodus 9:22-26 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be hail in all the land of Egypt—on man, on beast, and on every herb of the field, throughout the land of Egypt.” 23 And Moses stretched out his rod toward heaven; and the Lord sent thunder and hail, and fire darted to the ground. And the Lord rained hail on the land of Egypt. 24 So there was hail, and fire mingled with the hail, so very heavy that there was none like it in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation. 25 And the hail struck throughout the whole land of Egypt, all that was in the field, both man and beast; and the hail struck every herb of the field and broke every tree of the field. 26 Only in the land of Goshen, where the children of Israel were, there was no hail.)

By weaponizing the atmosphere, Yahweh demonstrated absolute sovereignty over creation. The Canaanites, who routinely worshipped astrology and localized nature deities such as baal (the storm god), were thus judged, mocked, and destroyed by the very elemental forces they idolized.

The enemy combatants perished from celestial ice rather than from Israelite iron—reminding me that ultimate victory is achieved in partnership with the direct intervention of the Divine Warrior.

The specific use of the Hebrew verb translated “hurled,” which is identical to the verb used in the Exodus account of the Egyptian hail, proves that this was not a random meteorological anomaly, but a highly directed act of divine providence.

Joshua 10:17,18 But these five kings had fled and hidden themselves in a cave at Makkedah. And it was told Joshua, saying, “The five kings have been found hidden in the cave at Makkedah.” So Joshua said, “Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave, and set men by it to guard them.

Joshua later ordered those stones rolled against the mouth of the cave at Makkedah to trap the five fleeing kings (Joshua 10:18), a poetic irony in God’s provision of the very implements of the Amorites’ judgment.

The Sun Standing Still: The Culmination of the Miracle

The catastrophic hailstorm is immediately followed by one of the most audacious, paradigm-shifting prayers recorded in the canon of Scripture. Recognizing the fleeting daylight and the absolute necessity of achieving total, uncompromising victory before the enemy forces could scatter and regroup in their fortified cities, Joshua boldly commands:

(“Sun, stand still at Gibeon, and moon, in the Valley of Aijalon” Joshua 10:12).

God astonishingly honors this unprecedented human request, arresting the celestial bodies to prolong the daylight “until the nation took vengeance on their enemies”.

This sequence of events solidifies a dual biblical premise: God responds to the bold, faith-filled, intercessory declarations of His covenant leaders, and there is no natural, physical law that supersedes or limits His sovereign will.

The suspension of the earth’s rotation, or the localized supernatural manifestation of prolonged light, ensures that the enemies of God’s covenant people are utterly vanquished, leaving no remnant to rebuild the idolatrous group.

Together, the selective hailstones and the prolonged daylight definitively demonstrate that God actively manages, sustains, and propels His creation to fulfill His specific, covenanted promises to the nation of Israel.

The New Testament does not abandon or abrogate the Old Testament warfare; rather, it elevates it to a universal, cosmic arena.

The Apostle Paul, in his epistle to the Ephesians, provides the definitive biblical perspective of spiritual warfare.

The physical Canaanites of Joshua’s physical battle inform us that in the realm of the spirit there are invisible, demonic entities, but the absolute necessity for spiritual militancy, divine armor, and reliance on the Lord remains fundamentally unchanged.

Ephesians 6

Paul defines the parameters and the adversaries of the believer’s combat:

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world’s darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12).

This bible passage reveals that the ultimate enemies of God’s covenant people in the realm of the spirit manipulate earthly institutions through opposing political ideologies in a highly organized, malevolent hierarchy of fallen angels and demonic forces operating under the dominion of the devil.

The thematic and tactical parallels between the Old Testament physical battles against the Canaanites and the New Testament spiritual battles against demonic forces are profound and deliberate.

Old Testament (Joshua 10 )New Testament (Ephesians 6 )
Coalition Building: Earthly kings (the Amorite pentapolis) unite under Adoni-zedec to destroy the covenant city of Gibeon (Joshua 10:4).Coalition Building: Demonic rulers, authorities, and cosmic powers highly organize under the devil to destroy and thwart God’s purposes (Ephesians 6:12).
Divine Intervention & Disarmament: God hurls catastrophic hailstones to secure the victory, rendering the enemy’s conventional weapons useless.Divine Intervention & Disarmament: Yeshua completely disarms rulers and authorities on the cross, making a public spectacle of them, securing ultimate victory (Colossians 2:15).

The Armor of God: Clothing the Believer in the Divine Warrior

To successfully withstand this highly organized demonic assault, believers are commanded by Paul to “put on the full armor of God, so that you can make your stand against the devil’s schemes” (Ephesians 6:11, 13).

This metaphorical armor is deeply rooted in Old Testament prophetic literature, specifically the descriptions of Yahweh operating as a Divine Warrior.

Isaiah 11:5 describes the coming Messianic branch as having righteousness as the belt of his loins and faithfulness as the belt of his waist.

Isaiah 59:17 depicts the Lord putting on righteousness as a breastplate and a helmet of salvation on His head.

By commanding believers to put on this specific armor, Paul is instructing the church to literally clothe themselves in the victorious attributes and the finished redemptive work of Yeshua.

Each discrete piece of the armor serves a specific defensive or offensive function against the deceptive tactics of the devil:

  1. The Belt of Truth: This foundational piece counters the lies, falsehoods, and deceptions that underpin the devil’s kingdom. Just as a soldier girds his flowing garments for intense action, believers must gird their minds with sound, sound doctrine and biblical truth to avoid spiritual tripping.
  2. The Breastplate of Righteousness: This guards the vital organs—the heart and the seat of emotions—from crippling demonic accusations of unworthiness. It requires the believer to stand confidently in the imputed righteousness of Christ, rather than their own flawed moral efforts.
  3. The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace: The devil hinders bringing the good news of the Gospel. Footwear provides necessary traction, stability, and readiness to advance into hostile spiritual territory, carrying the message of hope.
  4. The Shield of Faith: Used to actively intercept and extinguish the “flaming arrows” of fear, doubt, and temptation launched by the adversary. It represents a dynamic, active trust in God’s character and promises regardless of external circumstances.
  5. The Helmet of Salvation: This protects the mind against ideological attacks, anxiety, and despair, assuring the believer of their secure eternity and preventing the enemy from penetrating their thought life.
  6. The Sword of the Spirit (The Word of God): The primary offensive weapon in the believer’s arsenal. It is used to actively dismantle demonic strongholds, sever spiritual bondage, and directly counter lies with specific divine revelation, functioning exactly as Yeshua modeled during His temptation in the wilderness.

Intercession For Our USA Troops And Israeli Defense Forces

We put on the full armor of God this week, praying and fasting just as Moshe stood on the hill with the rod of God to secure Joshua’s victory against Amalek, and just as Joshua commanded the sun to stand still to complete the destruction of the Amorites, we continue to stand in the gap for our USA troops and Israeli Defense Forces today.

In the name of the living God of Israel, we exercise our delegated authority through the atonement to confront demonic strongholds, cancel evil geopolitical schemes, and release supernatural miracles and Adonai’s promises of victory, to continue permanently defeating the enemies of the USA and Israel.

AMEN

We wear the full armor of God, just as Moshe stood on the hill with the rod of God to secure Joshua’s victory against Amalek.
